Vera Bukvić
Vera Bukvić was born in 1947 in Popovo Polje, in Herzegovina. In 1967, following her marriage, she moved to Dubrovnik. At the beginning of the war in the 1990s she was in Mokošica near Dubrovnik, living with her husband and two sons in their house. Following the occupation of Mokošica, Vera Bukvić, her husband and her sons went to seek refuge in Dubrovnik. They occasionally visited Mokošica to check up on the state of their house. After the liberation of Mokošica and the retreat of the JNA [Yugoslav National Army], her husband was killed. Vera and her sons went into exile. From 1993 to 1997, Vera Bukvić worked illegally in Germany, and she later returned to Croatia. Her destroyed house was only partially reconstructed. Following many years of efforts to assert her rights, she managed to get an apartment, substantially smaller than the house her family owned before the war. The person responsible for her husband's killing was given a one year prison sentence, and there were irregularities in the court proceedings. Today she lives in Dubrovnik.
