Tonči Majić
Tonči Majić was born in 1951 in Split. At the age of 21 he was involved in a serious traffic accident, the consequences of which he suffered for a long time. The court proceeding against the driver, were started during the time in Yugoslavia, and still have not been concluded. At the beginning of the war in the1990s he became engaged as an activist and participated in many actions, such as obstructions of flat evictions taking place in Split. He also was also involved in attempts to prosecute war crimes that occurred, and has some insight into the functioning of the legal system vis-a-vis the resolution of those issues. In order to more efficiently oppose the growing trend of human rights violations, he was a co-founder of the Dalmatian Solidarity Committee. During his many encounters with representatives of the paramilitary units, police, and military police, he suffered physical abuse. In other incidents that could be described as human rights violations he was systematically defamed, by both judicial organs and the media. Despite all the difficulties that he has experienced, he still lives in Split today, remains active, and is contemplating writing a book in which he would present the genesis and evolution of flat evictions in Split.
