Štefanija Mršić

Štefanija Mršić originates from the area of Varaždin, but at the beginning of the 1970s she married and moved to the Zadar hinterland. Her family started building a house in Islam Latinski in 1976. It was completed in 1991 though they only managed to spend 18 days in it, before having to flee. During Yugoslavia she worked in the hospital, whilst her husband went to work in Italy in 1987. With the start of the war in the Zadar hinterland, in September 1991, she sought refuge with her daughter; first going to Italy, to stay with her husband, though they very soon returned to Zadar, which was being subjected to heavy shelling at the time. Her mother-in-law, who did not want to flee, was killed in her house in Islam Latinski. Her body was exhumed in 1996. Štefanija Mršić returned to her burnt down house in Islam Latinski in 1996 and has been living there since.
