Marko Bičanić
Marko Bićanić was born in 1962 in Saborsko, in Lika. During the Second World War, a large number of Saborsko inhabitants became members of the Croatian Home Guard and of special units of the Ustaše movement. Before the start of the Homeland War he worked in Plaški, which after the Serb rebellion constituted a part of SAO Krajina [Serbian Autonomous Oblast of Krajina]. He was in Saborsko when the first attacks happened on August 5, 1991, and he stayed there during the siege that lasted until November 12, 1991. At the time of the fall of Saborsko, his father was killed and his body thrown into a pit along with the bodies of some other villagers. In 1995, following the exhumation of bodies from the common grave, he and his mother helped identify his father’s remains. He joined the Croatian Army as a volunteer and participated in Operation Storm. Today he lives in Saborsko.
