Jelena Baketa

Jelena Baketa was born in 1937 in Lika, but she has been living in Lovas since 1939. She was a child born out of wedlock. He father was killed in the Second World War, in 1943,whilst a member of the Ustaše. At the outbreak of the war in the 1990s she was in Lovas with her husband. Two of her sons were living in Vukovar, whilst a third one worked for the police in Zagreb. As early as 21st of September, 1991 one of her sons was killed by a land mine next to Tovarnik. Following her son's funeral in September 1991, Jelena Baketa left Lovas and sought refuge. Her husband remained there until the end of 1991. She heard that her other two sons were in Vukovar. One of them managed to save himself and flee, whilst the other disappeared without a trace and to this day his faith remains unknown. Jelena Baketa participated at the trials in Belgrade for the crimes committed in Vukovar and in Lovas, but the justice that she hopes for has not been delivered. Her son's remains have not yet been found.
